The Wikipedia website contains descriptions of most of the suburbs in Auckland, contributed by various people. If there is no link for a suburb it is because there was no Wikipedia entry as of when this page was last updated. Wikipedia information is free, but may reflect the opinions of the various contributors. For all that, it provides an excellent summary for each of the major suburbs in Auckland as well as links to external information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page A note on the Ratings. The ratings are based on an index of relative affluence/poverty of the population of that suburb using NZ Census information. They include many factors other than just income. The complexity is simplified in the table by dividing the areas into five groups, which are colour coded for easy reference. In general, one would expect the more affluent suburbs will have less crime, better schools etc, but it is also important to understand what the neighboring areas are like. Also within a suburb there will often be better and worse areas. In the interests of an egalitarian lifestyle and equal opportunities, Auckland has State Housing scattered throughlout all the suburbs. The InSuburbia Guide to Auckland Suburbs shows the information in the table in a series of maps which show overall suburb affluence as well as for each street block in Auckland. A note on Suburb Names. There is no single, clear definition of Auckland's suburbs or of their exact boundaries. Devonport, for example can include several of the surrounding areas such as Stanley Bay, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, and even Belmont. Some Real Estate agents or sellers may be tempted to describe properties as being in a good area even if strictly speaking they are closer to another (not so good) one. Suburbs can also get renamed or amalgamated by the local council. 3. Map of Auckland Suburbs A map of Auckland suburbs is shown below.
