Auckland Suburb Guide

There are over 200 suburbs in Auckland. What are they like? Where are the good areas to live in Auckland? What about transport to work, I hear traffic can be dreadful? Where are the good schools in Auckland or close by? Where do other people like us like living in Auckland?

This site provides a good start point guide to Auckland suburbs. We have compiled links to several other sources of information on the different parts of Auckland, some free, some links to books you can purchase.

Whether you are a new or prospective migrant to Auckland, moving to Auckland or looking to move to another suburb within Auckland, you can start looking for information about Auckland's many suburbs & neighbourhoods right here.

Auckland is very spread-out geographically for a city of just over 1m people. There is a lot of sea & coastline mixed in with the land area so driving is not always in a straight line between two points! Auckland's suburban areas are divided into four cities and one district, which cover Auckland roughly as follows: Auckland City (Central) , North Shore City (North), Waitakere City (West), Manukau City (East & South) and Papakura District(South).

Where can I find information on the suburbs as places to live?

 1. InSuburbia Auckland Suburb Guide

The InSuburbia Auckland Suburb Guide is a book which shows all of the suburbs & schools in Auckland in a simple graphic series of colour maps with some easy to read additional text. Covering suburb layout, schools, where migrants from which countries tend to live, where the money is - and is not(!) it gives an instant easy view of what's in a suburb. The information is given right down to the street block level as well as 'big picture' overviews.

If you know where you're going to live, find out about it before you get there, or if you know what you want in a suburb, start hunting down the right suburbs for you.   A great book to have for anyone moving to or within Auckland. Costs about â‚¤18 (US$ 35) and can be ordered from the InSuburbia website.

A list of all suburbs in Auckland is shown below. For each suburb, the table shows the location and a rating of the suburb based on relative affluence. The monied suburbs are shown in green, the less so in brown and those in the middle in beige. Where a link is shown (suburb name underlined) this is to the Wikipedia entry for the suburb. A note on Wikipedia. The Wikipedia website contains descriptions of most of the suburbs in Auckland, contributed by various people. If there is no link for a suburb it is because there was no Wikipedia entry as of when this page was last updated. Wikipedia information is free, but may reflect the opinions of the various contributors. For all that, it provides an excellent summary for each of the major suburbs in Auckland as well as links to external information.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

A note on the Ratings. The ratings are based on an index of relative affluence/poverty of the population of that suburb using NZ Census information. They include many factors other than just income. The complexity is simplified in the table by dividing the areas into five groups, which are colour coded for easy reference.

In general, one would expect the more affluent suburbs will have less crime, better schools etc, but it is also important to understand what the neighboring areas are like.  Also within a suburb there will often be better and worse areas. In the interests of an egalitarian lifestyle and equal opportunities, Auckland has State Housing scattered throughlout all the suburbs.

The InSuburbia Guide to Auckland Suburbs shows the information in the table in a series of maps which show overall suburb affluence as well as for each street block in Auckland.

A note on Suburb Names. There is no single, clear definition of  Auckland's suburbs or of their exact boundaries. Devonport, for example can include several of the surrounding areas such as Stanley Bay, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, and even Belmont. Some Real Estate agents or sellers may be tempted to describe properties as being in a good area even if strictly speaking they are closer to another (not so good) one. Suburbs can also get renamed or amalgamated by the local council.

A map of Auckland suburbs is shown below. The map is reproduced with permission from a page in the InSuburbia Guide to Auckland Suburbs. Further maps in the book show the relative affluence in colour for each of the suburbs and for street blocks within each suburb.
